Understanding Skin Tags
Skin tags are soft, usually harmless growths that often hang from a narrow stalk. They commonly occur on the neck, armpits and other skin folds. Not every projecting bump is a skin tag, however. A changing, bleeding or unusually coloured lesion should be checked before any cosmetic removal is considered.
Common symptoms
- Small soft skin-coloured or darker growths attached by a stalk.
- Lesions in areas where skin or clothing rubs.
- Occasional irritation after catching on jewellery or clothing.
Causes and contributing factors
Skin tags become more common with age and can occur where there is friction. They are also associated with some metabolic circumstances, but a skin tag alone does not diagnose diabetes or another internal illness.
How the condition is assessed
A clinician checks that the growth is a skin tag rather than a wart, mole or another lesion. Location, bleeding, recent change and medication history influence whether removal is appropriate and whether a sample needs examination.
Care and treatment considerations
Harmless skin tags can often be left alone. If a lesion repeatedly catches or is cosmetically troublesome, discuss professional removal and its risks, including bleeding, pigment change and a small scar. Do not cut it off, tie it with thread or use corrosive wart products at home.
When to seek medical help
Arrange an assessment for rapid growth, unexplained bleeding, pain or a lesion that looks different from the others. Persistent bleeding or signs of infection after attempted home removal need prompt care.
Patient questions
Does every skin tag need removal?
No. Confirmed harmless tags can usually be observed. Removal is an individual choice when they are irritated or bothersome.
Can I use a wart-removal acid on a skin tag?
Do not assume it is safe. The diagnosis and sensitive location matter, and corrosive products can burn surrounding skin.
