Understanding Keratosis Pilaris
Keratosis pilaris causes small rough bumps when keratin builds up around hair follicles. It often affects the upper arms, thighs or cheeks and can feel like sandpaper. It is harmless and not contagious. Redness or dark marks can accompany the bumps, particularly when skin is irritated or repeatedly picked.
Common symptoms
- Many tiny rough bumps, often arranged evenly on the upper arms or thighs.
- Dry skin with skin-coloured, reddish or darker follicular marks.
- Sometimes mild itching, but usually no deep pain or pus.
Causes and contributing factors
A tendency to dry skin and family history can contribute. It commonly appears in childhood or adolescence and may change with age or season. It is not evidence that the skin is dirty or needs vigorous scrubbing.
How the condition is assessed
The distribution and texture usually guide diagnosis. A clinician should examine painful, suddenly spreading or pus-filled bumps because those features can suggest another condition.
Care and treatment considerations
Use a gentle cleanser and moisturise regularly, especially after bathing. Avoid picking, abrasive scrubs and repeated harsh exfoliation. A clinician may suggest a suitable smoothing moisturiser; irritating acids or retinoids are not appropriate for every age or situation, including pregnancy.
When to seek medical help
Routine review is appropriate if the diagnosis is uncertain, the appearance is distressing or skincare is causing irritation. Seek earlier assessment for pain, infection or a rapidly changing rash.
Patient questions
Can keratosis pilaris spread to other people?
No. It is not an infection and does not require household treatment or isolation.
Can scrubbing remove the bumps permanently?
No. Rough scrubbing may aggravate the skin. Gentle ongoing care can improve texture, but the tendency may persist.
