Understanding Folliculitis

Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle. It can appear as small itchy or tender bumps, sometimes with a pustule at the centre. Infection, shaving irritation, friction and blocked follicles are possible causes. Not every follicular bump is acne, and the cause determines whether an antimicrobial treatment is appropriate.

Common symptoms

  • Small bumps centred on hairs on the face, trunk or limbs.
  • Itching, tenderness or superficial pustules.
  • Recurrent bumps after shaving, sweating or friction.

Causes and contributing factors

Bacteria and yeasts can cause some forms, while ingrown hairs, tight clothing and irritation cause others. Occlusive products may contribute. Deep, painful swelling may be a boil or abscess rather than simple superficial folliculitis.

How the condition is assessed

A clinician asks about shaving, sweating, product use and recurrence. A swab or other testing may be useful for persistent, widespread or unusual pustules. Repeated use of leftover antibiotics can obscure the diagnosis and contribute to resistance.

Care and treatment considerations

Reduce friction, avoid picking and pause irritating hair-removal practices while the area settles. Keep personal razors clean and do not share them. Treatment may target irritation, bacteria or yeast depending on examination; one cream will not suit every cause.

When to seek medical help

Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain or a large deep lump. Recurrent disease or disease in someone with diabetes or weakened immunity also deserves assessment.

Patient questions

Is folliculitis the same as acne?

No. Both can involve follicles, but acne usually also includes blocked pores and has a different treatment approach. An examination helps distinguish them.

Should I squeeze a pustule?

Avoid squeezing or digging into bumps. This can worsen inflammation, spread infection and leave darker marks or scars.
